How to rescue and divide painted lady begonias

Come grow with me… How to rescue and divide painted lady begonias

This is an absolutely stunning houseplant and maintains its colour throughout the year. I thought that I was going to lose this plant last year but decided to see if I could save it by cleaning and repotting it. I am pleased to inform you that this was successful and the plant is now thriving and I am already propagating other plants from the parent plant that I was able to rescue.

Below are the simple steps that I followed, which includes propagating the plant via division:

1. Carefully remove the plant from its pot.Dispose of the soil and clean the pot.

2. Put fresh compost and soil in the pot, as well as some additional pots (I thought that this was a good opportunity to divide the plant). Carefully divide the plant. I was able to divide it into 3 separate pots, but this will depend on the size of your plant and how big you would like the new ones to be.

3. Cut off all of the leaves. This sounds rather drastic but I wanted to ensure that I removed anything that could cause the problem to reoccur.Clean the roots of the plant in water with a little washing up liquid, and then carefully rinse them with clean water.

4. Plant the divided roots into clean pots with fresh soil.

5. Water and wait.

It didn’t take long for the begonia to come back stronger than ever.

I really love this plant and therefore decided to try propagating it using two other methods that have been successful for me with other plants. The simple steps for these can be found on my website – why don’t you take a look and grow some plants for free…

I hope that you have found this quick overview to be helpful.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and I will do my best to answer these as well.
