How to grow kiwi plants from seed

Come grow with me… How to grow kiwi plants from seed

I enjoy propagating plants and wanted to share another of my successes with you. It really is simple to grow many plants for free, and I would like to share some of the approaches that I have used, so that you can learn from my experiences.

Here are my simple steps for growing a kiwi plant from seed using the seeds from a kiwi fruit that I purchased in a supermarket.

1. Separate some seeds from a kiwi fruit that you have purchased at the supermarket. There are a lot of seeds in a kiwi fruit so you won’t need them all.

2. Rinse the seeds to remove as much of the excess fruit as possible. I placed them in a small pot that I stirred with my finger – it was as easy as that.

3. Place the seeds on a damp paper towel.

4. Place the paper towel in a clear plastic bag.

5. Leave the plastic bag in a bright spot to let the seeds germinate.

6. Little shoots will appear and these can then be placed in small pots to let them establish.

7. Water the pots regularly but be careful not to over water them.

Frequently asked questions and useful tips for growing roses in your garden

How tall are kiwi plants?

Kiwi plants are actually vines that can grow up to 10m in height.

You will need to provide support for the kiwi vine. A simple structure can be made using 3 bamboo canes that are tied at the top to create a wigwam style structure.

Do kiwi plants prefer sun or shade?

Kiwi plants like full sun and well drained soil, to ensure that the roots do not rot.

How often do I need to water kiwi plants?

If planted in the ground, water newly planted kiwi for the first two years and then during dry spells.

If planted in pots they will need to be watered more regularly. I recommend using a moisture measure as a guide to when pot plants need to be watered.

Do I need to feed kiwi plants?

Once the plants have established, around 3 years, they can be fertilised twice a year, at the end of March and mid-June.

Do kiwi plants have deep or shallow roots?

Kiwi vines have shallow roots.

Can kiwi plants be grown in pots?

Kiwi plants are vines that can grow quite large, but similar to a lot of plants the size can be managed by growing them in pots.

What size pot should I use for kiwi plants?

Kiwi plants require large pots, at least 30l.

How long does it take for a kiwi plant to grow fruit?

You will need both a male and a female plant to grow kiwi fruit.

I am not expecting mine to produce edible fruits but as the UK is getting warmer, and it can take 4-5 years for the plant to mature and grow fruit, you never know what will happen…

I hope that you have found this quick overview to be helpful.

Let me know if you have any other questions, and I will do my best to answer these as well.
